Life's tough when you're a nothing-year-old. But I'm such a fan of my new favourite male model that I just let him sleep life's troubles away during the shoot anyway. At least his two besties (also notorious sleepers) managed to stay awake for most of the session.

We at Kim Grubb Photography are ~~clever~~ crazy enough to tackle animals and children at the same time.

Excuse me while I sleep on the job.

Martin and Jessica Combrink's Wedding

Models typically encounter a number of photographers in their careers, as do wedding coordinators. So when Jessica Combrink (née Stephens), a model at Scene Model Management and (at the time) Wedding Coordinator with Cathrin from CD Weddings, selected me to photograph the biggest day of her life I certainly felt honoured.

People who coordinate weddings for a living certainly know how to make their own day special, and Jessica's personal touches included everything from custom home renovations to match the bridesmaids' outfits to a private fireworks show on the Cottesloe Beach groyne, and pretty much everything in between. Exquisite food and warm hospitality was laid on for their sumptuous reception by Indiana's at Cottesloe Beach, Jessica's lovely makeup by Rebekah Clark and Craig and Kristen Turner from In Shot Productions worked their motion picture magic to immortalise the day on film.

For those who read my blog regularly (hi mum), you may remember way back to over a year ago that Kim Grubb Photography sponsored Face of Perth 2010 . Among other things, sponsorship involved donating a shoot as part of the grand prize package. You may remember also that Ayor Makur Chuot (Sarah Chuot) was the winner. She has since gone on to establish herself internationally, being signed with a number of agencies, not the least of which is Elite in New York. With this extensive traveling schedule, it took the better part of a year before we were all co-located to actually get the shoot underway.

How I Shot That Shot

Any photographer worth his or her salt overcomes all sorts of less-than-ideal conditions to get the shot every single time he or she takes the cameras out of the bag. One doesn't get any kind of bonus points for shooting under arduous conditions. You don't get the luxury of a paragraph (like the one below!) on the back page listing out the obstacles you had to overcome to achieve the photograph. And no one (especially the client) wants to hear from you "I could have gotten a better shot if it weren't for such and such less-than-ideal things". In any case I'm not one to pat myself on the back everytime I ~~pollute~~ grace the interwebmanets with a new image and as a result I don't do those self-indulgent "you should see how I got this shot, aren't I amazing? Just ask me" kinds of blog entries*. I guess I'm a believer that you need to strive for the photo to say that for you, otherwise you're not doing your job and you should focus more on that other part time thing you do to tide your income over.

* NB: no offence intended to those who like to expound such blogs entries, it's just not how I roll.

The conditions under which this image was shot were mildly amusing/interesting/etc if you ask me. If you don't ask me, well it's my blog and I can say what I want anyway. And I'm totally gonna. So here's a bit about what went into getting this shot.

Now when I talk about 'how I shot this shot', I'm not talking about "here are all the details about the camera, lens, aperture and shutter speed I used and how clever I must sound talking about the awesome sounding Photoshop layers I used afterwards", coz let's face it, that popppycock has essentially nothing to do with getting a good shot. I'm talking here more about the conditions under which the image was shot.

In an ideal world, if a photographer were commissioned to photograph an image to appear as the cover of a calendar and an Oyster Magazine advertisement and campaign for a new clothing line, then he would be afforded the luxury of setting up all the kit and rig ideal to getting the shot. In this case that would be something like (off the top of my head) a scaffold or cherry picker or some other such really high thing to stand on and shoot from to get sufficient altitude above the model, possibly an inclined plane to hold the model in a position perpendicular to the camera and even some kind of 'photographic studio' in which to carry out the whole affair. Oh yeah, and sufficient time.

But where's the fun in all that? Another way to pull it off is to have 30 minutes to set everything up and get the shot in a tiny hotel foyer - if you've been in the Melbourne Hotel's foyer, it's pretty tiny. As in a-couple-a-metres-across tiny. As in 'hotel guests stepping around the jeans and over the model' kind of tiny. Quickly grab a quilt from one of the hotel's beds (ideally one not occupied by a hotel guest at the time, trial and error required here), drag it down to the foyer, lay it out on the floor, have hotel staff look quizzically at you but be too confused/afraid/dismayed to ask what you're doing, have the lovely Sarah C. from Scene Model Management lie down on the quilt, cover her with items of Eighth Sin Denim Art, set up some kind of 'photographic lighting' to light the whole thing, and then run up the stairs and lean precariously over the balustrade with the camera. Also notable is not dropping the camera on the model or hotel guests from 2 stories up. This is all before being entertained by the confused expressions of all those coming and going to and from the hotel as to why there's a topless girl lying on a quilt on the floor of the hotel foyer. As always Sarah was a consummate professional along with the rest of the team for indulging my whims!

Bingo bango and you gots the shot.

So there ya go. Mildly amusing circumstances in which to be taking a fashion photograph? Or did it just seem funny to me on the last day of the calendar shoot after little sleep and food? I guess if I had comments enabled I could get everyone's opinion on that. But seeing as I don't, I'll just assume unanimous agreement across the entire reader-base. Hope you like the shot!

Face of Perth 2010 Calendar

The Face of Perth 2010 Calendar was launched last Wednesday. I shot the calendar all the way back in February, which seems like actual forever ago when you consider my attention span, so it was nice to get my grubby hands on a hard copy.

The calendar features portraits of the twelve finalists from the 2010 Face of Perth competition, including winner Sarah Chuot and runner-up Anika Sweetland.

At some point too I should probably do a blog post with one of those self-indulgent "you should see how I shot that photo" blurbs, as the cover image somewhat belies the conditions under which it was shot.

Zenya and Joe's Indian Wedding Ceremony

While return business is a good indicator that a customer approves of a photographer's work, a photographer generally doesn't hope to get return business from a wedding customer for obvious reasons. In some cases, however, a photographer is fortunate enough to receive a commission for two wedding ceremonies with the same couple. Such was the case with Zenya and Joe. Shortly after their wedding ceremony, they had a second ceremony which was a traditional Indian ceremony, and I felt honoured to be asked back to record the event. It was a fantastic evening with lots of colour, warm hospitality and sooooo much delicious food!

Earlier in the year I did the photography for local artist Echelon's album Parallels of Paradigm.

As the Triple J Unearthed blurb says, "Echelon is the studio alias of WA musician and producer Dane Jolly. With hard rock and also hard hitting breaks and chillout electronica, Echelon specialises in two very different ends of the musical genre spectrum. These tracks were produced and recorded by Dane in his home studio in May, 2008. Echelon's music is created using mic'ed guitars and drums..." and a whole bunch of software and hardware the names of which would baffle all but the most die-hard musos and gear junkies.

Ordinarily, for me, Shoot Day consists of a wholesome breakfast, a long macch. for the road, and then madly running about doing my thing with little or no time to eat anything. Quite good overall for maintaining my zimmer-esque frame. However, a certain commission last year resulted in quite a different effect on my waistline. When you scroll down you'll see why.

Sooo....much....delicious.....nom.

I seldom get to munch on my subjects after shooting them (oftentimes receiving complaints when I try). But when faced with a choice between either heading to the post office and mailing back the product to the client, or plonking myself down on the product photography table and scarfing down the product, the decision was obvious.

So what's it all about then? Despite the business name, I'm pretty sure they won't mind me sharing it with you (conversely if my lifeless carcass turns up with poisoned darts in my neck you'll know my assumption was wrong). Secret Ingredients sells an impressive range of hand-selected, luxurious, Western Australian, natural products - a 'one stop shop', if you like, for the South West's best in food, drink and even toiletries and other bathroom sundries. They even cater for those who may be desirous of dairy free, nut free, gluten free, vegan and organic. And for those of us silly enough not to live in the idyllic South West, it can all be accomplished via mail order simply by dialing up your internets and clicking your mouse on lots of delicious.

So check out what they have to offer. Support local business! Just watch out for your waistline. Oh, and it turns out the kinda fruity looking soap kebabs aren't food. Who would have thunk.

A visit to my website in the few short weeks since its inception would reveal a few greyed out links that say "Coming Soon" when your mouse pointer hovers lazily over them. One such link was "Portrait". This has now metamorphosised into a shiny new link that will actually take you somewhere. After some time digging around in the archives I've managed to start to get some of my portraiture work up there - portraits of bodies such as this cute little tyke:

Despite the first two photos you'll encounter, however, not everyone in the gallery is naked. There's a range of (generally clothed) portrait photography including family, pregnancy, baby, kids, test shoots and even a celebrity or two with more to be added soon.
